I learned some important tips from Joëlle Nonni, skin health education workshop leader at the Avène hydrotherapy center. All of the center’s patients – who stay for three weeks at the facility in the bucolic hills of southern France – experience some sort of skin problem, from severe cases of eczema to psoriasis, dermatitis and more. As part of their treatment, they can also attend Nonni’s make-up classes: medical make-up to cover burns and scars, and regular treatments to cater for sensitive and healing skin.
“If you don’t have good skin, makeup won’t solve that,” Nonni emphasizes, meaning that skin care should be the first line of defense. Still, she breaks down smart ways to navigate your beauty bag to get a clear and calm complexion.
“If your skin is very sensitive, you need to moisturize very well,” says Nonni. And it goes beyond just slapping on some moisturizer. She recommends spritzing thermal water directly onto the area where you want to apply makeup, which soothes and heals irritated skin. You can also spray it on fabrics and make a sort of poultice on your face (Nonni recommends leaving it on for 15 minutes). “It can naturally stop [thermal] water from evaporating and increase skin hydration,” explains Nonni, adding that circular motions are ideal. Then apply with a gentle moisturizing cream.
While you might assume that makeup labeled “all-natural” will automatically soothe sensitive skin, you still need to look closely at the ingredients. “If there’s a lot of perfume and three, four, five or more preservatives, it’s not that safe anymore,” warns Nonni.

“It’s easier to make sticky or compact formulas without too many preservatives because they don’t contain water, which feeds bacteria,” he explains.
An often overlooked element of beauty product packaging is the tiny symbol that says “6M” (six months), “12M” (one year), etc. – this is how long it will take after opening. Pay attention and make sure to replace the makeup when it expires. “It’s quite simple, but important,” emphasizes Nonni. It’s time to clean up the ship you’ve been loyal to for five years.
“We know that pigments increase skin dryness. Because a BB cream contains less pigment, it can be more effective,” says Nonni. Another big tip? Use powder sparingly, as it also absorbs the skin, which can aggravate sensitivity. If you rely on powder, wipe off any excess before applying to make sure you use the bare minimum.
“We like sponges because if the skin is textured, the sponge can leave a very smooth finish,” says Nonni, noting that rubbing is especially effective at covering wrinkles. However, you should be aware of the composition of the sponge. It is important to avoid the common allergen latex, which can trigger atopic dermatitis.

“Eyeshadows contain a lot of pigment, and if you have more colors, you can cause more allergies,” says Nonni. She adds that neutral tones like beige and bronze rarely cause bad reactions, but blues, greens, purples and other more saturated hues are “not so safe.” The same goes for bright red and deep purple lipsticks: “There’s a lot of pigment that dries out the lips,” she says.
