Hair Care After Swimming

Hair Care After Swimming – Chlorine protects us from harmful bacteria that can grow in the pool, but it also has a negative effect on our bodies, making our skin dry and itchy and our hair dry and brittle. Amy Horvath, swim instructor and mother of 2, shares tips on how to protect and prevent the effects of chlorine on the body.

One winter, my husband and I lived really close. At the end of my night shift, instead of showering at work, I decided to change and go straight home to shower.  I showered as soon as I got home, but within a week my itchy shins had turned to blood in my sleep and my hair felt like it should be feeding a cow instead of on my head. Those few minutes made a huge difference in my body’s ability to protect itself with its natural barriers.

Swimming is one of the most enjoyable things you can do, but it can take a toll on your skin and hair, especially in the winter.  No one likes straw-like hair, dry, cracked, and itchy hair.  I’m going to tell you some tricks that gurus use to keep your skin and hair healthy – call it my “Dry Skin and Hair 101”!

How To Prevent Your Kids From Getting Crunchy Hair After Swimming

Take a cool shower before getting in the pool.  I know it sounds gross, but it will help close your pores and your hair follicles will absorb the fresh shower water first, absorbing less chlorine.   It also keeps the pool clean for your enjoyment!

For extra protection, use a conditioner or conditioning spray after a cool shower for fresh water.  You can do the same for your skin by applying lotion or jelly before you get in the pool.

Wearing a cap on your head will not only keep the pool clean and enjoyable to swim in, but it will also help keep fresh water, chlorinated or salt water out of your hair!

After bathing, rinse hair and body with clean water.  If you wait to rinse off the pool water, it will evaporate from your hair and skin, leaving chlorine or salt behind, leaving you feeling dry and itchy.  There are special shampoos and body washes like Triswim that help remove chlorine and salt from your skin and hair after you wash. After showering, applying conditioner or coconut oil to your hair and applying oil to your skin will help retain natural oils.

Conditioners and lotions shouldn’t be the only thing you decide to wear on a swim day.  If you use it regularly for a week to maintain healthy skin and hair, it will prevent straw-like hair, dry, cracked and itchy hair.

Follow these tips and hopefully avoid dry and itchy swimming problems.  I can’t promise that your hair won’t turn green, so check back soon for tips on how to get rid of that lovely green build-up that makes your hair look like it’s being styled… Is your hair frizzy and dry? If you like to swim regularly, protecting your hair is very important. This is true regardless of your age or skin color. Learning to protect your hair early can save you from headaches. These hair products don’t have to be expensive. By choosing the right hair care products for bathing and using them regularly, you will have healthy and shiny hair that will not be affected by the sun or chlorine. This is exactly what we will talk about in this article.

I have always loved swimming and since my twenties it has become a habit. Until 2022, we bought a Kayak pool in our backyard and now I swim twice a day. I never got better, but new habits like this can be expensive too. My hair and skin are probably the most noticeable. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to my hair. After all, we chose a salt pool, and we hardly feel or smell chlorine. But, of course, this is still to keep the water clean. Within about a week, I noticed how dry my hair was, even after wearing a cap and washing it regularly.

Then I started doing my research, trying a few products before and after I got out of the pool and decided to incorporate them into my routine. What a difference they made!

Note: everyone’s hair is different. This is my experience and I hope you find a combination of products that works for you. I only recommend products that I like and use.

This is the #1 tip most people don’t talk about because they don’t know pre-shampoo exists!

Silicone caps provide the best protection for your hair and are waterproof. When worn correctly, you’ll notice your hair is almost completely dry when you get out of the pool.

Have long hair? You will need another silicone cap with enough room to hold all your hair. Try a different swim cap to see if it works better.

Disadvantages of silicone lids? They are uncomfortable to wear. I know they look cool and you’ve probably seen swimmers wearing them in practice and competition. But for recreational use, they really strain your legs and sometimes give me a headache. Instead, I usually wear a more comfortable silicone cap. They come in different colors and sizes. As for their waterproofing? It’s not quite the same as a traditional silicone cap, but it’s still pretty good.

Note: do not use cloth caps. They are waterproof and keep your head cool on windy days. Needless to say, your hair is completely drenched when wearing a cloth cap.

I recently tried Trihard’s 2024 hair care collection and wish I had known them for years. The product is very high quality, smells amazing and leaves my scalp feeling fresh and minty. The first time I used it, I could tell the quality and ingredients of the shampoo and conditioner. I also love that the conditioner can be used before or after swimming. After using their shampoo and conditioner regularly, I can’t wait to try all of their products, including their skincare products.

This is a well-known brand that has been around for a long time. They work well and the price point feels right for most people. They’ve always been a part of my rotation and my go-to post-swim shampoo.

Remember Aqua Guard for pre-shampoo? There is also an after bath shampoo and conditioner. Their products are not only effective but also gentle and perfect for everyday use.

Another favorite brand of mine is Tri Swim. They are heavily promoted by Swim Outlet, one of my favorite online stores for all things swim related. Tri Swim has shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion. The scent of their products is always pleasant (think fruity and citrus scents that cheer you up in the shower). Yes, they are also part of my product rotation.

If you have dry, chemically treated hair, I recommend the Malibu C Swimmers product. I realized that when I moisturize and color my hair, I damage my hair more with chlorine. I decided to upgrade my hair products to Malibu C Swimmers.

I highly recommend this set with an anti-chlorine shampoo, deep moisturizing conditioner, and deep cleansing treatment.

I was a big fan of So Cozy Kids for my hair. After years of using regular shampoo to wash my hair every day, I decided to use it as a baby shampoo

Day and saw a big difference. But not just any baby shampoo, SO Cozy Kids smells the best and is so gentle on removing oil and dirt that leaves my hair soft and smooth. I can’t believe that after a few years they have swimming shampoo and hair spray – not only for kids but also for adults I believe.

For less than $12, you get shampoo, conditioner, and body wash all in one. This may make some of you question its effectiveness, and I was pleasantly surprised. Having known their brand for a while now, I love one of their regular shampoos and this new product does not disappoint. But if you have colored, damaged, or especially long hair, I recommend the above 2-step system (shampoo and conditioner as separate products). However, if you want a quick, easy, and inexpensive solution, So Cozy Kids is just the thing
