When you first start your fragrance journey, you will have to rely on the perfume descriptions to determine what you might be interested in trying. Most descriptions will include the fragrance notes, which is simply a way of describing the components that make up the fragrance. Most fragrances contain top, middle and base notes.
Scent mixing can take many forms and is not limited to perfume. It can be a combination of body wash and lotion, lotion and perfume, or multiple perfumes. It is important to remember that each fragrance has a meaning and can affect the final result of the fragrance.
If you’re looking for more control over your scent, opt for fragrance-free body and skin products, leaving a blank canvas for perfume.
At the beginning, we recommend combining a maximum of two or three fragrances. This gives you more control over the results, testing and determining what you like and what you don’t like. Speaking of testing, we always recommend testing the layers of perfume on a piece of paper before applying it on yourself. It should be noted that your pH balance will also affect the final outcome of the fragrance, but checking on a piece of paper will ensure that you’re not stuck smelling something you hate all day. The perfume overlay will consist of a combination of base and top notes to create a completely new fragrance.
Letting Go Of Perfume Layering Woes
Your base note (the perfume you start with) should be your strongest or heaviest scent. This ensures that it doesn’t overpower the lighter scents you mix with it. Your base fragrance plays an important role and is the “base” of your custom fragrance. Play with the power of your base – do you need one syringe or two?
Choose a base note that is rich, heady and warm like vanilla, musk or precious woods like cedar and sandalwood. We like to start with stronger scents like After Hours, Green Green or Happy Hour.
Your top note (the perfume to add to your base) should brighten up your base note. You’ll want something that isn’t overpowering and competes with the base note, but should stand out on its own. Again, you may need to play around with how much top note you need to get the perfect scent.
Try floral or fresh scents for your top note. Think of notes of fresh greens, flowers or citrus that lift the mood and invigorate. We like to complement our Sun Kissed base scents to brighten or Cozy You to soften.
The Art Of Arab Fragrances: An Expert’s Guide To Perfume Layering
When it comes time to apply fragrances to your skin, think about the place and type of perfume application before strategically placing two fragrances.
If you are spraying both perfumes, consider spraying the base perfume and then immediately spritzing the top perfume and then mixing to ensure the two scents blend properly.
If you’re combining roller perfume and spray perfume, you’ll want to start with the roller perfume as a base and then spray the top perfume directly on top of it, rubbing the area to blend the scents.

Especially when you’re just starting out, it’s important to start with simple perfumes that don’t have a ton of base, middle, and top notes. The more complex the perfume, the more difficult it will be to layer, and it can be hard to tell what you like and what you don’t.
