It was important for the Bears to get their passing game going and instill some confidence in their freshman signal caller after the team was held to only 131 passing yards in the previous week. Being one-dimensional isn’t going to cut it if VMI stifles their rushing offense on Saturday.

After opening the season with four consecutive losses, the Bears finally saw a light at the end of a long and disappointing tunnel. They were able to flex on the winless Citadel Bulldogs and finally notch a win in the column. Meanwhile, VMI is coming off back-to-back wins over Western Carolina and Furman.

Samford has the talent and upside to be a bit of a factor in the SoCon, but it’s 1-2 after strong performance in a loss to Furman in overtime (okay) and opening up with a loss to East Tennessee State (NOT okay). The offense has been fine, but the run defense hasn’t been anything special and the five turnovers – three against Furman – all seemed to hurt.

Speaking of disappointment, Wofford is right there with Furman as one of the stars of the SoCon, but a 24-13 loss to Chattanooga last week hurt. The offense stalled, the two turnovers hurt, and the team couldn’t control the clock like it needs to.

Statistically, Mercer was outplayed, as the Bulldogs rushed for 338 yards and had 413 total yards of offense versus 354 for the Bears. However, two turnovers helped lead to 14 points for Mercer, producing the margin of victory.
