The 4 Best Pencil Sharpeners (2024 Review)
Yes, please contact us at 1-800-257-4771 Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm CST and we will do our best to walk you through any issue you may have with our CARL item. A sharpener may be a simple tool, but which one you use can change the performance of your materials completely. When getting a sharpener, you need to consider the diameter of the pencils you want to use, the brittleness of their leads, whether you want a manual or electric sharpener, and what kind of blade you want. In this post, we look at the different pencil sharpeners available, and test their compatibility with different pencils.
Leaving for a moment sandpaper, sharpening blocks and knives, which are used to sharpen charcoal, graphite sticks and others, there are two main types of pencil sharpeners: Blade Sharpeners and Helical Sharpeners.
Blade sharpeners are the more familiar of the two. These are the pencils we all use at school. You simply push the tip of the pencil into a conical chamber and twist. The pressure forces the tip of the pencil into contact with the blade, which remains stationary. As the pencil rotates, the blade removes the pencil’s wooden casing and sharpens the lead.
Helical sharpeners are more complicated than blade sharpeners. With a helical sharpener, it’s the cutting apparatus that rotates, not the pencil; the pencil remains stationary, tied in place. Instead of a blade, they have a cylinder with a rotating series of sharp ridges along its length. This cylinder is attached to a cog, which causes it to rotate while going around the pencil. The sharp ridges grind against the pencil, scraping the wood and sharpening the lead to a fine point.

These sharpeners are small and portable. They vary from large plastic models for use with Jumbo pencils, to sharpeners for pastel pencils, with softer leads that do not hold a fine point. (note: the round Faber-Castell UFO sharpener is no longer available.)
This is the simplest and cheapest pencil sharpener we sell. It is small, tough and portable, although it only sharpens standard diameter (e.g. 7 mm) pencils.
What Is The Best Long Point Pencil Sharpener? I Look At Two Handheld Options — The Gentleman Stationer
This KUM Double Metal Sharpener pencil sharpener is made of metal and has two steel blades. It fits any 7 mm and 9 mm pencil.
This sharpener is small, economical and portable. As with most of the plastic pencils we sell, the color of the item may vary.
This double-hole sharpener is suitable for use with 7 mm and 9 mm pencils. It is light and very economical.
This sharpener is designed for use with Stabilo Carbothello Pastel Pencils, which have softer leads than regular graphite pencils and cannot hold a fine point. So they should be sharpened at a slightly wider angle (ie a stubbier point).
My Favorite Pencil Sharpener For The Art Room (ever)
This quality plastic sharpener has a hole that fits 7 mm diameter pencils. It sharpens pencils to a stubby tip and is therefore suitable for use with pastel pencils, which have soft leads. It is basically the same as the Stabilo Carbothello Pastel Pencil Sharpener, but it has a special feature; a small plastic rod that can (in theory) be used to fish bits of lead out of the sharpening assembly. (If you look at the shape of the sharpener, it’s not really possible for pieces of lead to get stuck in it, but you never know when a small plastic rod can come in handy).
This sharpener is designed for use with ‘Jumbo’ 12 mm diameter pencils such as the Faber Castell Series 9000 Jumbo or the Koh-I-Noor Jumbo Graphite Pencil 1820. The color of the plastic part of the unit may vary from that shown in above.
This sharpener is designed for use with Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 Pencils. It doesn’t seem to work well with any other pencil.
This Faber-Castell pencil sharpener is made of steel and will retain its point. This is a double hole sharpener that can sharpen standard diameter graphite and color pencils.
The Best Pencil Sharpeners
The body of this sharpener is made from magnesium while the blades are high-carbon steel. It’s a two-step sharpening – the first hole removes the wood, and the second shapes the lead to create a long, precise tip.
A high quality pencil plane designed to last. Instead of the insert and twist sharpening mechanism we’re all used to, the pencil is run across the blade while gently turning. This makes it easier to sharpen your pencil without chipping the lead. Each pencil plane includes 10 carbon steel blades.
We tested our reservoir sharpeners on a variety of pencils, from large (a Koh-I-Noor Jumbo Graphite Pencil) to small (a Cretacolor Karmina Colored Pencil and a Staedtler Tradition Sketching Pencil). We also use two pencils which are difficult to sharpen, because they contain bits or broken leads; a Conte a Paris Charcoal Pencil and a Stabilo Carbothello Pastel Pencil.
In the following table, an ‘X’ entry indicates that the pencil and sharpener are incompatible. Either the pencil doesn’t fit, or the sharpener just chews through it and cuts the lead.
The Fastest Pencil Sharpener
The star performer is probably Jackson’s Double Pencil Sharpener. I also like the Caran d’Ache Double Metal Pencil Sharpener for Grafwood and Technalo Pencils.
Reservoir pencil sharpeners have a compartment that catches dust and pencil shavings. This ensures that your workspace remains clean and also means that your pencil can be quickly and easily sharpened during a drawing session, without having to leave the table. They are usually a little larger than non-reservoir pencils, but because they are less likely to leak graphite dust or pencil shavings they are better for artists on the go. (note: the green Jakar sharpener in the photo is no longer available.)
This new and portable Jakar sharpener combines a reservoir sharpener with an eraser, with a plastic cap to keep it clean. It is suitable for use with standard diameter pencils.
The sharpener rotates: it can be turned inside so that it does not drip graphite dust through the blade aperture. To empty the pencil shavings from the (very small) reservoir, simply shake the sharpener out and pull it out of the main unit.
Afmat Office Electric Pencil Sharpener Heavy Duty, 6 Holes Auto Stop E
This Staedtler Pencil Sharpener is designed for use with regular graphite pencils. It is a single-hole sharpener with a reservoir for graphite and wood shavings and a cap to prevent dust from escaping from the sharpening hole when not in use. When the reservoir is full, simply press the button on the side to release the lid then place the sharpener in a bin. It’s made of plastic, but this sharpener has an air of solid reliability about it.
This Jakar Trio 3 Way Pencil Sharpener is made from durable yet lightweight plastic. It has three holes: one for sharpening colored pencils, one for regular size graphite pencils and one for jumbo pencils. It has proven to be the most versatile of all the reservoir sharpeners sold by Jackson, and it is also very portable. When it is cut together,
