Former Jets receiver Kenbrell Thompkins has been charged by federal authorities after he allegedly fraudulently obtained benefits that were earmarked for those who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thompkins, who also played for the Raiders and Patriots, is accused of using stolen identities to illegally obtain the cash, according to TMZ. He is charged with aggravated identity theft and access device fraud.
TMZ reported that Thompkins received roughly $300,000 in the form of debit cards, then was seen on surveillance cameras using them to withdraw the money at a number of Bank of America locations in Florida.
Thompkins, 32, last played in the NFL with the Jets in 2015, when he logged 17 catches for 165 yards in seven games. He was signed again by the team in 2017, but released before the season started. He then had a stint in the CFL.
Thompkins is cousins with free-agent wide receiver Antonio Brown. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
